Reunion Tour

(Spoiler free, just ask Swerve)

If you haven't caught up yet with the happenings of Rodimus and the Lost Light crew in the past thirteen issues of Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye, then you better pick up the phone and call the ambulances, because you have an emergency on your hands! With a slew of great comics in the form of the up tempo Robots In Disguise, the well written flashbacks in the monthly Spotlights, and the thought provoking issues of More Than Meets The Eye, it's far to say that large percentage of fans of the current IDWverse are anticipating Wednesday after Wednesday after Wednesday. It has been revealed in previous issues, and it is rather quite obvious if you have seen this issue's covers or its preview; one of the most deadliest Decepticons has been a passenger of the Lost Light, unbeknownst to the majority of the rest of the gang. MTMTE #14? Enter Overlord.

Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #14 Review - Guess who's back, back again!

It has been a wild ride for the former formidable Phase Sixer since the Last Stand of the Wreckers. A prisoner in the basement of the Lost Light, this issue puts Overlord against our other star of MTMTE #14, Chromedome. Perhaps at first glance, this may seem like a pseudo Spotlight: Overlord, but as much as the focus is on Overlord, much like Shadowplay, Chromedome's past is at the focus of this issue as well. We know Chromedome's talents, and his mastery of mnemosurgery has given him the short end of the stick to tackle Overlord and his mind. Supposedly the short end of the stick means he has to do it alone too.

Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #14 Review - Guess who's back, back again!

Or was it his choice altogether? It is a sad circumstance, but the adversity faced by the members of the Lost Light has been somewhat adventurous, but truly nothing life threatening. The cockiness, bravado and arrogance of the majority of the members of the Lost Light, sans Ultra Magnus, looks to have rubbed off on Chromedome. Facing Overlord by oneself, even if he is bolted down and chained, is something that one should never do. Just ask Rotorstorm, Twin Twist, Top Spin, and Pyro. *cry* Wreck and rule, guys!

Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #14 Review - Guess who's back, back again!

Okay, now it might not have settled in yet, but by the Matrix, Overlord is back. This character has been hyped and written up so well that the mere mention of the name strikes fear in me as a reader. To know that he has been on the Lost Light all this time is one of the most frightening revelations, his presence is a ticking time bomb. While he may have been put on the ship for purposes aiming to benefit the Autobots, those plans, like the ones Bumblebee and Prowl had in Robots In Disguise, are never going to come to fruition. The events of this issue are just so indicative of Overlord's character, that I'm not entirely too surprised, but it is still the utmost pleasure to read.

Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #14 Review - Guess who's back, back again!

Roberts and company know how to deliver a quality comic, which is able to encompass a vast number of characters, and still capable to develop their personalities at the same time. Wednesday. You = @ your local comic store, you won't regret it.

“...time to bot up...”

The amount of reveals and surprises in this issue is practically unparalleled. It’s a culmination to about 14 months of build up. The alliances, the backstabbing, the confusion, the rumors, the terrorism...we get a really good sense of what has been going on within the pages of this issue...FINALLY!

Lunchtime Reading Suggestion: Read IDW's ROBOTS IN DISGUISE #14-- You won't be sorry!

And as a fan of the character PROWL in GENERATION ONE TRANSFORMERS lore, I’ve been eyeing this series very carefully, and chiding the writers for PROWL making decisions that while some readers saw them as PROWL being PROWL and it was good character writing, I was in the other camp. I didn’t want ‘my PROWL’ to be like that. So I became less interested in the PROWL piece of the series because every action seemed to lead to something less and less Autobot PROWL like.

Lunchtime Reading Suggestion: Read IDW's ROBOTS IN DISGUISE #14-- You won't be sorry!

Big reveals in this issue to no one’s surprise focus on PROWL simply because last issue he was with a group of DECEPTICONS and working with them which, of course, left that point needing to be explained. And this issue it is. Which is why I had to read it! I had to see if BAD PROWL was going to become WORSE PROWL and why. Is it indeed him, or is there something else going on here? Sure, many people will find the revelations about PROWL’s reasoning for his behaviors obvious, maybe even too predictable, or ‘the easy way out’, but there is a piece of this story involving PROWL that you just... you won’t predict, no, shouldn’t have and couldn’t have ever predicted. It’s that out there of a concept.

Lunchtime Reading Suggestion: Read IDW's ROBOTS IN DISGUISE #14-- You won't be sorry!

Ideas of gestaltism, and the evolution of combination are up front and center, as is Megatron’s return and subsequent new body (spoiled by the cover), and his plans for the Decepticons push to be in control of Cybertron again. The Autobots take a pounding, and one wonders if there is any hope for them at all, until the last page of this issue where some reinforcements arrive.

Lunchtime Reading Suggestion: Read IDW's ROBOTS IN DISGUISE #14-- You won't be sorry!

Not everything that we had questions about in RID has been answered. After reading this though, I did want to go back and re-read everything from the beginning to see if I could pick up the hints, subtle or not, that were there.

I don’t want to spoil too much here, but you SHOULD REALLY GO BUY THIS ISSUE. I feel like it will be one that people look back at and say, “Yeah, you remember when _______ did this in _____________? That was...WOW!” It’s that kind of issue.

Lunchtime Reading Suggestion: Read IDW's ROBOTS IN DISGUISE #14-- You won't be sorry!

It’s also a great lunchtime or break time read. RID Issue #14 came out today, and you should check to go see if your comic store still has it in stock! This is easily a 5 out 5 stars issue. ‘The Fall of the Autobots’ is as bad for the Autobots as it sounds...

Site sponsor Kapow! Toys has provided pictorial reviews for Transformers Prime Beast Hunters Deluxe Wave 2's Smokescreen and Bulkhead. Check out the reviews below.

Beast Hunters Wave 2 Deluxe Smokescreen

This was the one I was most excited about and in hand it doesn't quite deliver. Don't get me wrong, its a nice figure but has some issues, mainly the fact the shoulder assembly is quite fiddly and loose due to the transformation, your going to probably need to apply a little super glue or clear nail polish to get it to stiffen up a little. Rather than design this appears to be down to Hasbro's cost cutting measures which if they keep going this way won't end well.

Looks wise he is a great toy, he's got the whole door / wing thing going on along with a great face sculpt and some really nice articulation particularly in the leg area and a weapon which can be loaded with the missile on its own or with the electro-net accessory. The armour which many people said didn't look nice is actually pretty good in person, its very flexible plastic and not stiff so allows the limbs to move freely and removes any danger of damaging the item when clipping and un-clipping it.

Car mode is superb and a really nice race car aesthetic giving a real Le-Mans feel. The armour looks nice applied or left off and the accessories such as the missile launcher and gun can be mounted on the roof or the armour.

I was hoping to score this guy super high but sadly he only scrapes in at a 7.5 / 10

Beast Hunters Wave 2 Bulkhead

Bulkhead gets shrunk! and he's not too bad for it. Coming in the now familiar Roadbuster colour scheme Bulkhead transforms from him familiar 4x4 mode to robot and back again. He comes with a MechTech style buzzsaw which is activated by pumping a little switch causing the blade to spin round fairly fast. The decoration is also fairly cool with an animal style face imprinted into the plastic. Bulkhead himself could have done with his regular face but instead comes with a Beast Hunters helmet style design like Bumblebee before him, This has made him look slightly like an old fashioned deep sea diver. Articulation wise he lacks waist swivel which is due to the transformation and his forearms could have done with a fist swivel which is sadly lacking and therefore can impact his poses.

There is a lot of good points with regard to old Bulk but probably not enough to attract new fans, if you collected Prime you may have now decided its over for you but if your into Beast Hunters then Bulkhead is a worthy purchase just not an essential one.

Overall Bulkhead scores 7/10

Rage of the Machines

(Spoiler free-ish)

The month of February brings an end to the latest IDW four issue Transformers series, Rage of the Dinobots. For those who have been enjoyed the 'of Cybertron' video games series, is a fan of the Transformers Prime universe, or likes the Dinobots in general, then Rage has been decent series. While not exactly at the same echelon as MTMTE or RID, Rage extrapolates the story left behind in Fall of Cybertron, although the series itself has been reminiscent of Movieverse comics.

Re: Transformers: Prime—Rage of the Dinobots #4 Preview

Enter Shockwave. The Decepticon mastermind has been silent in the past three issues, with his goons doing most of the work to Ultra Magnus and the Dinobots. His characterization is much like the one in FoC, cold, calculated and always having a backup plan up his sleeve.

Re: Transformers: Prime—Rage of the Dinobots #4 Preview

It is a shame that there has yet to be a signal of the Prime cartoon adding more Autobot characters to their roster, as Grimlock, the Dinobots, or even Ultra Magnus would add an even greater dynamic to the show.

Re: Transformers: Prime—Rage of the Dinobots #4 Preview

I think one of the bright points of the entire series is the unmasking of Grimlock. Just a really nice touch by the artists.

Re: Transformers: Prime—Rage of the Dinobots #4 Preview

Overall, Rage of the Dinobots has been a generic series that provides a link between the events of Fall of Cybertron, and to our current cartoon. I think from first glance it is easy to tell whether or not this is your cup of tea - the paperback will be released in May.

Transformers REGENERATION #88

(CUE OMEGA SUPREME VOICE INTONATION)
Time-off taken. Return imminent. Content Limited, Discussion: Classic Transformers Storytelling.

As worn out as the first arc of REGENERATION made me in trying to review, analyze, and decode; I found Issue #88 a pleasant, fun story (and it’s lead issue 87) to return to.

Back on Board - Review of TRANSFORMERS REGENERATION #88

As I dig into Grimlock making a cliché ‘deal with the devil’ to receive a new body and get his fellow Dinobots restored to full health as well, I can’t help but think about all the previous versions of Grimlock there are in the fiction, and what kind of a metamorphosis he underwent throughout Simon Furman’s work with him. Back on topic- Grimlock’s deal.

This deal my friends is what steers the course for Scorponok’s adventure to Cybertron. Like the classic Transformers tales of nearly 30 years ago, whether it be in comic or cartoon form, this issue oozes magnificent world domination scheming reminiscent of cartoon Megatron, and one trick devices that look to turn the tide for one side or another along the lines of ‘THE HATE PLAGUE’, ‘THE ULTIMATE DOOM’ or ‘MEGATRON’s MASTER PLAN’.

The best thing is, for me, that was part of the excellence of Transformers from my youth, the unbelievable plans, the crazy inventions and devices that just happen to come into being with each new story or episode. The gullible-ness (innocence?) of many of the characters to be misled.

This issue takes me back as fan-favorite Scorponok sans his former headmaster partner Zarak, looks to take back Cybertron for the Decepticons. He plans to do this by making all the inhabitants into Decepticons using a gene key that will unlock the ‘warrior gene’ in all the Autobots, basically taking away their inhibitions, and morals -- for all purposes making them Decepticons as well. The device is first used on a small scale so that Scorponok and his partners can set up the large planet-sized key that will do the work a lot more quickly.

Back on Board - Review of TRANSFORMERS REGENERATION #88

Back on Board - Review of TRANSFORMERS REGENERATION #88

Grimlock, meanwhile, is back on Cybertron as well, aiding Scorponok as little as possible, but not trying to put a stop to his efforts either. Grimlock’s mind is trapped on his fellow Dinobots, and the whole Nucleon experience that he put them through.

And there are plenty of side plots to help keep all the characters moving somehow: like Hot Rod’s search for the Primus chamber; Optimus cleanup on Earth; Starscream, Shockwave, and Galvatron re-united; and Soundwave’s scheme with Bludgeon, all of which could be linked to Scorponok’s current bid for dominance of Cybertron, and possibly... the universe!

It’s nice to feel this way again. I mourn the loss of Springer before he really even got started in this NEW (old) series, but find myself now that we are past that whole big, huge Optimus versus Megatron event, able to enjoy REGEN again.

Back on Board - Review of TRANSFORMERS REGENERATION #88

Pick it up and enjoy the fun!

Easily 4.5 nostalgic stars out of 5!
