Earlier this month Jagex Games Studio announced the name of the much anticipated MMO: TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE. Following that announcement, they released their first asset pack for the game including a teaser trailer, concept art and an animated screensaver.

You can checkout www.transformersuniverse.com to register to receive email updates about the game and the chance to participate in the Beta.

For those who missed the news, here what was announced about the game at BotCon:

- Hasbro and Jagex have joined forces to develop and publish a TRANSFORMERS MMO.

- The title of the MMO will be TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE.

- TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE will be an action orientated MMO.

- In TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE players will be able to create and play as their own AUTOBOT or DECEPTICON, designing and customising the character to fit their game play style, combat preferences and appearance.

- After looking at the mechanics, the iconic TRANSFORMERS IP, and the TRANSFORMERS heritage Jagex distilled this into core themes which are present throughout the TRANSFORMERS universe: conflict, teamwork, and social regard (the AUTOBOTS caring for the humans)

- TRANSFORMERS UNIVERSE sits within the "Prime" timeline, along with the book Exodus, the War for Cybertron games and the Prime cartoon.

- The game will be released in 2012.

Here is the concept art which was released in this asset pack for your viewing enjoyment ...

Not trying to nit pick as the concept is cool and I love the art better than most bayformer artwork, but just out of curiosity, What kind of vehicles are these suppose to be? Prowl has only two visible wheels and two doors, Barricade seems to have all four wheels on his arms so the wheel base would be ridiculously short or his arms will be extremely long and fighter has 7 wheels and uses the wheels for shoulder joints. I am just trying to picture the transformation process in my head for that one. Again this isn't a bash, just a hard time visualizing the transformation.

My one complaint is that they seem to be limiting us to cars and jets, I want military vehicles, helicopters, and boats (submarines) as well.

Otherwise looks like an amazing game!
Hopefully its Mac compatible.

Hm? Prowl has wheels on his shoulders and the big robot only has five: four for the car and one spare that would presumably be mounted on the rear.

On the artwork I am looking at it looks like a fender not a wheel or a rim on his shoulders. As for the fighter, I would agree on the one for the spare, however if you look at the heal of the fighter it looks like there are two more wheels down there (one for each leg). Again that could just be a fender point, which would make transformation a bit more confusing.

Since this takes place in the TF:Prime universe and there's overtures that humans may be involved, I'm hoping we get to attack Miko if you play as a 'Con. That would make me very happy.

Same here. If I could smush both Miko and Rafael, I'd be a happy man. The annoy the ever lovin crap outta me.

Gotta say, I'm fairly excited for this. But, with a game called Universe, I'd figure it would encompass the entire TF universe, not just Prime. Kinda a bummer, but still really interested. Hope it hits consoles.

They flip around a bunch of times and they're a car. Simple as that. That's how it's always been done.

This is coming from someone who isn't even that into MMOs
If you are really into Transformers as much as an insane too-old-for-cartoons person as I am, its here where you show youre support. If the game turns out to be okay... with fan support, it could endure to be great with game updates, and even a sequel that trumps the first. Screw the movies, this is where the business needs the fans to pull together and give it the benefit of the doubt.
As for the characters having the same sort of body shapes/contours, as much as I didn't like the fact that I sorta noticed that myself, it could be due to customization working globally as the user changes part types on his bot. I'll forgive them about all the noticeable downfalls already if the game is FUN. Which is what matters most. People nowadays get so preoccupied with all the extra crap that really don't add much to gameplay.

Looks great. My only problem is Prowl's face. I've never really liked the sunglasses look. G1 Prowl has always been my favourite TF and I love his original appearance. The visor was the only thing I didn't like about Animated Prowl.

Otherwise, this looks great.

Fan support doesn't mean a game will be good or get better. You ever wondered why Star Wars: Galaxies ceased to be? It wasn't because it didn't have enough fan support, it was because SOE thought they were making the game better and instead screwed over the players.

As for "business," there is none. it's free-to-play, so there won't be any money coming in. Even if they use Exteel's (Rest its mechanical soul) micro transaction system...well, that system turned out to be not enough to save a really great game.

MINDVVIPE wrote:I'll forgive them about all the noticeable downfalls already if the game is FUN. Which is what matters most.

I won't, the noticeable downfalls are what makes a game not fun.

If people downright ignore this game, it'll show poorly on the market for a Transformers MMO. If people played it despite being somewhat cruddy (but with some redeeming qualities), other developers might invest time and effort into figuring out how to do it right, even if it isn't made by the same company.
A micro Transaction system or not is beside the point i'm trying to make. the TF world barely gets any good games, theres no need to be so overly picky when whats there so far is enough to have me playing it, atleast a few times round to show them gamers are willing to log on and play. If the game is free, there is even more chance that they might add stuff to it, at a cost or free, who knows yet. They might not want to invest a ton of resources right away when this is pretty much uncharted territory, being a TF MMO. There is always business involved, its a Hasbro Product... someone is making money of this at some point along the lines, even if the game is free.
You dont know if the downfalls will hinder fun factor yet, since you haven't played it... so.. my point still stands.

That's not how it works. You know why no one is planning on a new Star Wars MMO? Because BioWare is already doing it, and they're only doing it because SOE lost the license. You know why there's no plans for a new Star Trek MMO? There already is one. You know why there's no plans for a Batman-themed MMO? DC Universe Online.

No one is going to try to make a better MMO when tons of people are already giving one their attention.

Also not how it works. You don't praise a game because it's the only one of it's kind. If it's good, you praise it, if it sucks, you bash it. The franchise has literally nothing to do with this.

MINDVVIPE wrote:If the game is free, there is even more chance that they might add stuff to it, at a cost or free, who knows yet. I really don't get what you're saying. They'll add stuff anyway, long-runner multiplayer games always do that. But not because the game is free. A free game means no revenue, no revenue means they have to find some other tactic to make money, because without money, the game goes down. Exteel tried exactly what you're thinking, non-free content, but it didn't save it in the end. Team Fortress 2 has the Mann Co. Store which is the exact same thing, except TF2 costs $10 and it's servers are run by players so they don't have to spend money on that.

MINDVVIPE wrote:You dont know if the downfalls will hinder fun factor yet, since you haven't played it... so.. my point still stands.

I never said there were any. I said downfalls are what make a game not fun. So my point still stands.

It's a browser based MMO. So you'll run it in Firefox or IE or Chrome or whatever, instead of it's own client like a normal game. So it won't hit consoles, and it's barely even hitting PC.

You can't compare one MMO to another; in regards to how it grows and expands within its own IP.
WFC was, in my opinion and game critics', a fantastic game, yet the multiplayer barely has anyone online. If this TF universe MMO also lacks online players, it WILL die, and then, HOPEFULLY, get rebooted by someone who sees there was a market for it, since fans still want certain things out of a TF MMO that they will have claimed to have missed from this one. You pretty much made my point by explaining how the failures get turned over into a new version, made by a different company, or if they are currently alive, then great, it has the chance to introduce new material without scrapping the entire project.
Bashing a game that hasn't come out yet is anti-marketing, your basically getting it into peoples heads that it isn't worth remembering... not that this game is at risk of it, but it would be great to see as many people get onboard so that it might actually be good after some mileage, due to game updates, that fix bugs, introduce new characters and even game features (i.e. tanks and maybe even jets if the game is built to support it), all of which might not get introduced if the users in multiplayer never amount to huge numbers.
A game is never going to be free and exist without making money somehow... thats just retarded.
There's in-game advertising, as well as what you mentioned, with micro-transaction.
ANYWAY, my whole point was to not be too picky, as this is the first TF MMO, and if we give it the time to try it out, with the fact that we are Transformers fans, and will give anything that is Transformers and looks promising a shot, we might have a good game, either now, or in 5-10 years before we all die. Downfalls can be minor, and they can be major, minor downfalls can suck at first, but can be fixed with fan support, and communication with the developers on forums on what sucks and needs to be patched.

I hope it's not the case, but I see this turning into a generic "WoW clone" MMO with the Transformers license slapped on to it. I see a lot of boring, clicky PvE combat that turns into a big grind for experience. I might just be a big negative nancy, but it's happened so many times in the past. Star Wars, Conan and Lord or the Rings have all had their names slapped on games that were stinky piles of poop because they didn't bother to try to do anything new or intersting.

I really hope I'm wrong. I want this to be something more than "push 1 and 2 repeatedly until the enemy dies". I guess I'll reserve my judgement until I see more.

Yes I can, actually. I can do that very easily. In fact, pretty much every game reviewer will do it. Most gamers do it as well.

MINDVVIPE wrote:WFC was, in my opinion and game critics', a fantastic game, yet the multiplayer barely has anyone online.

That's because WfC's multiplayer was programmed by people who couldn't program their way out of a wet paper bag.

MINDVVIPE wrote:Bashing a game that hasn't come out yet is anti-marketing, your basically getting it into peoples heads that it isn't worth remembering... not that this game is at risk of it, but it would be great to see as many people get onboard so that it might actually be good after some mileage, due to game updates, that fix bugs, introduce new characters and even game features (i.e. tanks and maybe even jets if the game is built to support it), all of which might not get introduced if the users in multiplayer never amount to huge numbers.

Have I bashed the game yet? No, but I'm being very, very doubtful about it. When it comes out, I'll give it a few hours of attention, then, if need be, I'll bash it. or I'll praise it. But I doubt that.

MINDVVIPE wrote:A game is never going to be free and exist without making money somehow... thats just retarded.

Fat lot of good that did Exteel.

MINDVVIPE wrote:with the fact that we are Transformers fans, and will give anything that is Transformers and looks promising a shot

That sentence doesn't make sense. We are Transformers fans, even if it looks promising, we'll still find an excuse to tear it apart. Our fandom is notorious for not being happy with anything we're given.

WfC has been out for nearly a year now, and they still haven't fixed any of the problems in multiplayer. All they do is release experience-bonus weekends and $10 DLC packs.

No, because none of the characters you're talking about look the same. There's some slight similarities, but nothing that aren't fairly common TF aesthetics anyway. (Door-wings, for instance)

barricade= megatron very strongly.
prowl= bumblebee in more then just the wing doors aspect, but the whole body really.

fighter? he screams bulkhead! Spare tire and all that jazz. plus, he's just all bulk and he's got all the same stuff in all the same places.

that's more than just a few similarities.

let's do some comparisons:

Megatron and Barricade. Aside from pointy shoulders, I'm not seeing the similarity.

Prowl and Bumblebee. Maybe the feet, shoulders and window-wings, but the torso, arms, head and everything else are very different.

Fighter and Bulkhead. Swing and a miss. No idea why you'd think they look even the slightest bit similar. Maybe you're thinking of Breakdown, but there's still no real similarity, aside from the tires on/in his shoulders and back.

Given the ability to customize shoulders, legs, etcetera, independently, it's HIGHLY likely most transformations won't make any sense at all in game if you study it beyond what flashes by as you play regularly. Even in WfC, where you couldn't customize the chassis bits, transformations were still faked to some degree. The Armada game's probably the closest transformations may ever be to physically possible/realistic [in game].

I for sure wouldn't want to be on the game developing team that had the task of customizable bots PLUS proper transformations. That'd be a workload nightmare for more team members than would be fiscally feasible. :(

Anticipated by us, and even then, only for the past week. The outside world only has slightly raised eyebrows, and that's only if they've heard about it.

Shadowman wrote:Yes I can, actually. I can do that very easily. In fact, pretty much every game reviewer will do it. Most gamers do it as well.

Yea, its all from an audience pov, not from the company's internal pov; you don't know the main reasons for why they do certain things, you can only guess from reviews and sales records, theres a lot of money changing hands inside a company as they do business, all these factors and more count for why a game company might prolong past a conceivable end, or die out too soon.
Shadowman wrote:That's because WfC's multiplayer was programmed by people who couldn't program their way out of a wet paper bag.

Actually, the multipalyer, despite the PCs lack of properly managed servers and in-game chat, still managed to score highly with critics, they attributed the major downfall being to people not playing it enough, and not being able to find matches often enough, not that the online experiance wasn't fun.
Have you played COD World at War? their online services are almost exactly the same on PC, except you have chat and servers, things that are not critical to a good online game unless its a tactical simulation fps like oldschool rainbow six. So again, the problem here is people playing the game.

Shadowman wrote:Fat lot of good that did Exteel.

Exteel seemed to have suffered from the same problem I am addressing, which is not enough people playing it, and probably couldn't keep selling upgrades from the lack of players.

Shadowman wrote:That sentence doesn't make sense. We are Transformers fans, even if it looks promising, we'll still find an excuse to tear it apart. Our fandom is notorious for not being happy with anything we're given.

When it comes to Transformers video games, we're lucky to even get them considering how much of the rest of the world cares, I'm not saying your bashing it, I'm just saying people need to stop caring about things like "no jets" and try to actually have fun with whats there. Pretty sure lots of people stopped playing WFC after ranking up fully, coz all they cared about was ranking up.

Shadowman wrote:WfC has been out for nearly a year now, and they still haven't fixed any of the problems in multiplayer. All they do is release experience-bonus weekends and $10 DLC packs.

Again, probably from a lack of gamers, who have so many other online games to choose from with a much more estabalished background, like gears of war. I'm not claiming the online structure of WFC is good, but it IS enough to have awesome couple matches, if you can find the players to play against.

No, the problem is the game being programmed by retarded chimps. I once tried to join a game, only to be kicked out because I didn't have the map the match was playing. So I tried to join another match, only for the same thing to happen. This occurred four times in a row. How hard can it possibly be to write a line of code saying "if they don't have the map, don't force them to play it." And that's not even getting into the host migration problem.

I have the console version, mind you.

No, plenty of people played it. They just weren't selling enough stuff to justify keeping it alive. Which is why the micro transaction system is inherently flawed; very few people will pay money if they don't have to.

Are you being serious? Lack of players is the reason they haven't patched their game? That's a really lousy excuse. They might as well just say "We really don't care about the game or getting back all of the players we lost, so we're not going to try to fix any of the painful mistakes we made programming it."

As much as a bad excuse it is, I feel its quite likely, since they need to assign good programmers to deal with problems, especially if the last guy was bad at setting it all up. The cost of assigning a good programmer to a game thats already made the money it can is, unfortunately for us, bad decision making.
Yea, a lack of host migration sucks, as well as being forced to joing games you don't have the map for. I have run into that problem on games like Call of duty world at war (xbox this time) and it was a huge annoyance such that that was probably when my interest in it dropped. Its difficult to keep playing fun games when online structure sucks, granted. As for exteel, you surely know more than I as I have never even played it, but only read about it. Not saying micro transaction and other sources of revenue are adequate for games to keep rolling, or to even be good, but this is probably why I never play MMOs anyway, I rather not play a game with crappy graphics, or a game I have to pay constantly to enjoy.
I am, however, willing to make a huge exception for this Transformers one, but thats just me I guess.

I'd like to weigh in on MINDVVIPE & Shadowman's conversation, if I may. Otherwise just ignore this.

Pertaining to why WfC hasn't been patched since release I believe has to do with their project scheduling. Put very simply - they didn't expect beforehand to have A or B class issues past the date the game shipped - so it was not planned, either for people to work on it, or for the money to be put aside in the budget for it. At the point when the game was released, then, it would've cost them likely far more money than they would have got in return for fixing the problems after release, I'm sad to say. So this was an irreversible problem looooong before the game was even made. Somebody go whack their Game Director upside the head and ask him to budget that in next time (even bunch it up "DLC + extra testing" if Activision initially doesn't want to give them money simply for post-release fixes - which in theory gain you little to no money anyway - only people playing longer, which is nicer for the players in general), if at all possible. So, yes, that means if they haven't done it for DoTM or WfC 2 yet then it's too late for any problems they may have after release as well, unless they sell insanely well.

You got it. I used to be a QA tester, and these A and B class bugs are ones that should have definitely been addressed. But I have also seen lots of brutal bugs go unfixed due to how developers prioritize things towards the game milestone goals.
It is kind of a shame since, as the game gets cheaper from a lack of sales at the current price, people do pick it up to try it out, being cheaper, but these people won't stick around, and won't even try it out if they read reviews and realize it still has game hinderances. But I guess that only makes the distributors money and no longer the game company. bah...
