The first thing I wish to point out is that unlike any impression I had before, the helmet is not overwhelming the face. What I mean is that his face still seems to take the bulk of the helmet rather than look small within it. Also, speaking of the face, his lips are quite sexy. Not fully outlined like a comic drawing but he definitely has lips. You can see images of me trying different looks on him, with the helmet raised a bit to see more of his brow as well as him using the Sky Shadow head.
I also tried seeing which Titan Masters fit best in his chest if one wishes to open the flaps and have everything fully blue. It turns out Scourge has the best Titan Master for the job, Fracas. The blues match quite well. I also tried Highbrow and Trigerhappy.
The colors are also very good. I feared they would be too bright and take away from the bad-ass I know Overlord to be. He can still look imposing with teal and the blue is a nice deep colour. Speaking of the colours, the glossy paint used for the black and the blue really pops and gives him a nice finish. I especially love how the paint apps for the legs and the chest flaps create a panel lining effect, highlight the sculpted detail.
He does have stickers though and some were peeling off but I applied some pressure to them and hopefully they stay stuck. They don't seem too out of place but nothing beats tampographs for me.
While Overlord shares the very same tank mold as Sky Shadow, the upper torso/jet is 100% new. To the point that the base mode is entirely different and rises much higher than Sky Shadow's. Plus, one of his base mode connectors is around his crotch area, which I had never noticed before. Another thing I had not noticed was a reverse crunch joint along with the fact that the nosecone of his already removable jet cockpit is also removable.
All in all, those who like Sky Shadow are sure to like him. He is big, imposing and had a nice helping of paint where it matters, highlighting some cool detail. He also has probably the best base mode yet from Titans Return with limbs acting as towers (why did Hasbro only figure this out after remaking Fortress Maximus?). I sure don't regret spending the money and I mean come on, we FINALLY have an affordable Overlord for our collection!
Below you will see more images of him in his other modes with Titan Masters Giga (Dreadnaut, who comes with Overlord) and Mega (Ominous, who comes with Sky Shadow) as well as shots of all three Phase Sixers united.

Has anybody seen Wave 5 ANYTHING at a California Target yet?
I haven't.
Toy aisles just recently got rearranged. Still tons of Broadsides as the Targets I've been to. I just went to one in San Diego this morning that look like it had a fresh case of wave 4 legends after having bare pegs for a couple of weeks. No Titan Masters at all.
Lucky, I'm still sitting on alpha trion and astrotrain and the wave three deluxes at my stores, and no one is getting any leader class figures...
The only Voyagers I saw recently were Optimus Prime and Megatron at a local TRU when hunting for the Chaos set (missed out big time ): no Walmarts or Targets had any left! Same for Leaders, it's only Deluxes Wave 4 and Titan Masters Wave 3, with some Legends here and there.
Pretty surprising you still have Wave 2... then again, I was stuck with Wave 1 Leaders for the longest time.

Thats is exceptionally fortunate. Many here on the boards would love some wave 4 Deluxes. As for where I am, there are 0 left in all of Canada. They appeared for a week and then were gone never to be seen again. They were replaced by Wave 3 restock and then wave 5.

Of the lot, Quake is the hardest to find, while Krok is relatively easy, despite each coming one a case. Only Target has the wave it seems.

Hey Will, can you see any difference between PMOP and "Magnus Prime"'s core thigh pieces (the big fat blue part that the trailer panels and feet attach to)?

Hmmm, so the modified feet only gets him as tall as Ginrai. That's too bad. If only there was a way to make the torso just a little bit longer. A third party needs to make a spacer to stick in between the torso and legs for just a little more height, though that may not make his gun-abs look right.

So if you want that size relationship, what you need is a Supreme-class Overlord. You could get stupidly lucky and win the lottery and buy an original, a third-party might make one, or if you're feeling enterprising you could make one yourself (I've been contemplating this, I think Cybertron Supreme-class Starscream might work as a base figure).

ZeldaTheSwordsman wrote:You can only add so much to his height before it makes things look weird/ugly. The fact is, you just can't get the Masterforce size relationship with a Leader-class Overlord and a Leader-class Ginrai. In Masterforce (whose fiction, aside from making the Pretenders' robot modes big and their shells small, followed the toy sizes more or less) Ginrai was essentially a Leader-class figure... and Overlord was essentially a Supreme-class figure (like most G1 Citybots).

It occurs to me that any further discussion of this would be off topic so I'll post a reply in the Legends thread.

I now have a new Holy Grail to get. G1 Overlord. I thought G1 Scorponok was expensive at 400$. A 100% complete overlord is 700$ at the base minimum!

Hehe. Reminds me of the first Auto Assembly after Last Stand of the Wreckers came out. One of the stalls had loads of G1 Overlord toys in various states. It was dubbed Overlord Mountain by the attendees. Was a thing of beauty.

We never saw SixShot in stores, nor did we ever see Sky Shadow. It seems like the distributors deliberately chose to NOT send any near our realms, reducing us to looking online, where the prices are sky-high. There has been no sign of them on HasbroToyStore. SixShot sold out in record time, was quickly listed 'out of stock', was subsequently taken down months ago, and has not re-appeared.
Death, have you thought of getting these at other online retailers?

These seem to be reappearing as the Voyager Prime & Megatron are. I've seen both Sixshot and Skyshadow at my local TRU in the past couple of weeks.
as I'd hoped...with no new TR coming out (sans Slugslinger), I figure most figures will be reissued between now and the holiday before PotP is released.

Therefore, my TR collection is now only missing:
Ramhorn, Slugslinger, Clouraker, Wingspan, and Arcee w/ UM. Considering LG-42 appears to be sold out everywhere, I won't be getting him any time soon, sadly.
I think Ramhorn might be the hardest one to get, because he was shipped with 3 other repacked figures, no retailer seems to want to separate him out, unless you want to pay $15 for him!

Well, not if you used the $4 shipping. BBTS is in Wisconsin and I'm near Chicago. My PoL shipped last Thursday and is scheduled to arrive this Thursday. In my case, the $4 shipping means it goes from Wisconsin, to St. Paul, MN, to Champaign, IL to Indiannapolis, IN, where it will eventually be transferred to the USPS for final delivery.

Nice, mine are usually about 4 days as well, but that is from time of shipping. My most recent order sat in "processing" for 4 days before they even shipped it, then a week for the actual shipping.

Let's not forget the Skids flashback where Tarn tricked him into slowly melting a bunch of Autobot prisoners; talking about how he doesn't believe in a Heaven but he does believe "Hell exists" while making Skids watch.
This franchise's tone has really gone far since the days of Optimus Prime playing basketball with Spike.

I think Last Stand of the Wreckers is where this series changed for me. It stopped being a fun, childish comic and suddenly became a serious and dark world whith a smiley face painted over it.

To be fair, IDW was aimed at an older audience from the start -- aside from of course the G1 setting drawing in nostalgia-induced audiences more than anything, you did have a darker tone and greater complexities than you'd expect from a children's franchise and it did as a result break away from a lot of those tropes.
That said, I think you are right in stating LSotW as the point where they really started taking advantage of the higher-than-normal age of their target demographic. Arguments could probably be made for Everything in its Right Place, mind; but LSotW is certainly where things got 'gritty', for lack of a better term.
... anyway, let's get back to talking about children's toys! Who have the pleasant gimmick of tearing the head off fan-favourite characters and turning them into a little robot!

I really hope something newer than wave 3 actually does show up before the end of the year - even if it's only online.
I'd quite like a Legends Bumblebee or Brawn. Not seen a thing for 6 months other than a few Rescue Bots and a few RID One step changers and the 1st wave of TLK stuff. (no voyagers).
I think the Price increases didn't help.

Sorry to brag, but I gotta' flaunt it a little. I have both versions of Overlord and the blues are slightly different, or the purples--can't remember--- I don't have them standing next to each other right now, but I know that they are different. But now I have almost all the Action Masters, I have G1 Apeface, Snapdragon, Defensor, Computron, 6 more headmasters, 12 pretenders (notably Bludgeon and Thunderwing) and a few more other G1s... As well as Scorponok!
Many if not most of them never even crossed my mind that I'd ever own them. But the stars aligned and they all came to me almost at once!
So a G1 Overlord certainly is not out of the question. As well as G1 Skyshadow and the G1 Masterforce pretenders and Headmaster Juniors... It will only be a matter of when.

Will do so tomorrow morning But from what I saw, it made no difference. Believe it or not, Takara went with that Hasbro grey unpainted plastic on godbomber (on his face too, which sucks), so they end up matching quite well.

Let me share my G1 Overlord experience perhaps as a cautionary tale. Overlord was a figure I had wanted since I was a kid, until 2012 when I finally had a complete Overlord in my possession. I got him piece by piece over a 6 month period. I got everything separately. The jet, the tank, Mega, Giga, the weapons, everything. Every 2 weeks when I got paid I would buy a piece, regardless of the price. When he was completed, I was elated. For about 2 days. When the euphoria of finally having the Grail I have wanted for 20 years wore off, I realized what G1 Overlord really was: an inarticulate brick. Yes, that can be said about a lot of G1/G2 figures, but for some reason I expected Overlord to be more. But I was disappointed. I left him on the shelf for a while, after all, I got him to be displayed, but even there he felt like an eye sore. He didn't scale with Ginrai, or any other figure, except maybe G1 Scorponok or G2 Megatron. So I ended up selling him, and I haven't regretted it.-Kanrabat- wrote:I said that I will never have G1 Overlord due to his price.
The above is a big reason I am looking forward to getting a TR Overlord, as the new figure looks to be superior to the G1 in every way, except maybe the integration of the Master figures.
I also wanted to share this so you can think about why exactly you want to get a G1 Overlord, especially before you commit to a large financial investment that a complete mint Overlord requires.
Posted by ZeldaTheSwordsman on August 23rd, 2017 @ 12:37am CDT
Rodimus, I've seen them photographed together so I'm curious as to why you don't think G1 Overlord and Ginrai scale with each other. Admittedly by cartoon standards as well with God Ginrai (since the animators gave that combo the same sort of Super Mushroom Devastator et al usually got) admittedly, but otherwise he's reasonably in scale with the Masterforce toys. Among which, well... Funny you should bring up G1 Scorponok, considering.
williamjames88, can you take some shots of the God Ginrai/Apex Armor combo from the back? Also, I reiterate a question that seems to have been lost in the excitement: Can you see any actual difference between the core pieces of the calves on Hasbro PMOP and on Magnus Prime?
Posted by Rodimus Prime on August 23rd, 2017 @ 1:05am CDT
Overlord towers over even God Ginrai in robot mode, despite Overlord being bigger in Masterforce. It's just not accurate and that always bothered me. The new TR figure looks like it will be better standing next to both the G1 and TR versions of Powermaster Prime. And the articulation is much better, along with little to no parts-forming.ZeldaTheSwordsman wrote:Rodimus, I've seen them photographed together so I'm curious as to why you don't think G1 Overlord and Ginrai scale with each other. To say something that's on topic with this thread, I believe I saw the Deluxe class Transformer that turns into an alligator or something at Target.
No, they are re-creating a scene from a comic book where Overlord stomps Pipes.
And still that's the most brutal thing in the IDW series
Ummm... Didn't the DJD electrocute and melt a guy before forcing him to eat his own brain?
Let's not forget the Skids flashback where Tarn tricked him into slowly melting a bunch of Autobot prisoners; talking about how he doesn't believe in a Heaven but he does believe "Hell exists" while making Skids watch.
This franchise's tone has really gone far since the days of Optimus Prime playing basketball with Spike.
But i still prefer Megatron went berserk and killed Tarn by force

Rodimus Prime wrote:I realized what G1 Overlord really was: an inarticulate brick. So I ended up selling him, and I haven't regretted it.
G1 Scorponok and all the G1 Headmasters are exactly that. Unarticulated bricks with wonky looks and proportions.
Best example is just look at G1 Chromedome compared to the new TR version:
The G1 DO look pretty primitive compared to the NEW TR. But know what? I can't help but like it. It have that vintage naiveté that I just adore. Plus he's more fun to fiddle with than the TR version. And finally, the TR's values is increased tenfold just for being beside the original. Because I dind't really cared about that toy before getting the original. Now that I do, I found a new appreciation for the update. It the same thing for Midwipe, Skullsmacher/cruncher, Wolfwire/Weirdwolf, and Highbrow.
Each of these G1 Headmasters cost me 140$CAN. And oddly enough, I have no regrets.
The only thing that would make me regret buying a G1 Overlord is if the Powermaster gimmick get faulty or hard to use like G1 Dreadwing/Darkwing (that I thankfully avoided). My ultra expensive G1s are also for playing.
I'm the guy who LOVE his vintage robots, especially if they are FUN to play with. And I love their derpy looks. I even like the Super Gobots cars.
I can understand wholeheartedly what buyer remorse is for expensive figures. But it's different for everybody I guess. My biggest regret is Takara's MP-11 Starscream. What a piece of garbage with his cheap look, wonky chest, and for TRIPLE the price of the original...
