Kicks on Fire gives us a look at Nike's new special edition Air Max Flyosite (aka Megatron Edition). A reference to the Detroit Lions' Calvin Johnson, who bears the nickname Megatron. These special edition shoes feature several Transformers themes integrated into their design including an altered Decepticon faction symbol with "CJ" and "81". Check out the mirrored images below.

Want. Right now.

Looks cooler than the sp. ed. Megatron shoes from 2-3 yrs. ago - Footlocker exclusive. I really wanted the Soundwave shoes from that set, but those sold out the first night. People were in line for em. I hope they rerelease and I hope these CJ shoes are made available to the public

I live in Atlanta and am a pretty big Falcons fan. A couple seasons ago when Detroit was in town to play the Falcons, the announcer commented how Calvin Johnson aka Megatron was being covered by the then cornerback Brent Grimes aka Optimus Grimes (local announcers dubbed him that before this game). Thus, you had Megatron vs. Optimus Grimes!

I thought it was pretty cool for the announcer to point that out and mention it during the broadcast!

For some reason I like those shoes. I'm not going to wait in a mile long line for them, but if I happen to come across them I might pick up a pair. :MAXIMAL:

Cool-looking shoes, but I don't know if I'd wear them. They're a bit too out-there for me.

You know, when I first saw the 'Con symbol on the front of the tongue there, it reminded me a fair bit of Vortex's face.

Why does it say 81 on them? Johnson was born in 85. Also, why is his nickname Megatron?

81 is his jersey number, I have no idea how he got the nickname though.

A former Lions WR Roy Williams gave him that nickname because he is "an unbeatable machine at wide out. He's a damn robot. Megatron." (I'm paraphrasing here).

When the Lions play other teams with young and over-eager secondarys they will readily try to apply the nickname "Optimus Prime" to themselves. It rarely works out as CJ is just too tall, too fast and too good.

Example:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2012/10/25/optimus-prime-richard-sherman-seahawks-calvin-johnson-megatron/1657505/ Also, this is a great article. It seeps with Transformer puns and wordplay. A true fan of the franchise wrote this article for USA today.

Also, I love the altered faction symbol. I see the mix of Decepticon logo and football helmet with visor. Nicely done. :CON:

Those are far out! Too far out to wear on the town, but those are definitely coppable! They would add fire to any collection, but if you want something to actually wear, check out those House of Hoops Soundwaves... well if you can find em for under $500 (damn resellers!)..

Those house of hoops shoes were sold out in less than a day pretty much. I hope they get reissued. Scalper prices are terrible. Moreover, i want these CJ Megatron shoes! Grid from packaging! sick!

I want these but $200 (w/tax) is too rich for my blood. Not worth it to hunt for it on black Fri. either. Sounds like a nightmare. Tryin to save up for a trip at the end of the month too. After MP Prime and FOC combaticons - kinda tapped out too. All caught up for the yr. -no more $ on toys/collectibles.

NIKE LAUNCHES CALVIN JOHNSON'S CJ81 COLLECTION INSPIRED BY MEGATRON

Nike celebrates a long-standing weekend of football and an athlete that has truly transformed the game.

NOVEMBER 21, 2012

Image

In celebration of Thanksgiving weekend, Nike celebrates a long-standing weekend of football and an athlete that has truly transformed the game. The Nike CJ81 Collection Inspired by Megatron speaks to WR Calvin Johnson’s rare combination of physical talent and mental toughness. This menacing combination creates a prototypical specimen that undoubtedly deserves a moniker like Megatron. Much like the fictional character, Johnson relies on his uncanny ability to pull out an arsenal of physical strengths or “weapons” based on anything he encounters on the field.

The collection, inspired by the Hasbro Transformers character created in 1984, features iconic Nike silhouettes across lifestyle, training and performance including the CJ81 Nike Air Max Flyposite, CJ81 Nike Huarache Free Shield, CJ81 Nike Vapor Jet Glove 2.0, CJ81 Nike Vapor Football Sock, CJ81 Nike True Adjustable Hat, and the CJ81 Nike KO Hoody.

Merging the old and new, the traditional Transformers grid pattern and colors of black, silver, purple and blue from the original Megatron packaging, help highlight the CJ81 logo design.

The limited collection will be available starting November 23 at several Nike retail locations as well as Nike Yardline at Champs Sports and Eastbay online.

So I'm guessing the weird Decepticon logo is this guy's personal logo?

I don't want to turn this into something it's not, but how is this that much different than what third-party companies do and where are those that are so opposed to third-party companies? I don't see anywhere where this a collaboration between Nike and Hasbro, but they are using a faction symbol that is clearly derived from the Transformers brand, the name Megatron, and they even fully acknowledge what they are doing. Is the faction symbol a direct copy of the Decepticon symbol? No, but is Hercules a direct copy of any existing Devastator design? Again the answer is no. I just find it interesting that when a third-party company puts out a figure we always hear about how they're ripping off Hasbro, but isn't Nike doing the same thing here? Unless of course there is some deal in place between the companies, but if that were the case I would imagine we would see some Hasbro branding on this stuff.

For the record, I think this stuff is awesome and would love to get that hoodie!

This is an actual, legit collabo?

Weird. I mean good on TF/Nike for the effort, but it's just done in such an odd way. It's almost like a knock-off collection instead of a licensed collabo piece.

I don't see any cross branding, but the official Transformers facebook page is sharing a link to the Nike press release so obviously they approve.

The faction symbol is actually fairly clever! I know there are people on here who like to whine and complain. the faction symbol is actually a a football helmet with the facemask and eye shield. I think that it serves it's purpose and actually looks fine if you know about sports and know what you are looking at!

I know what I'm looking at: 3rd party (ie Non-Hasbro) non-Transformers items on the front page.
Might as well be some KOs.

I'm sure Nike is smart enough to pay license fees for megatron and what not. They are not some KO company. Let me ask you this... Is this first time that there has been third party news on the front page? Last time I checked megatron TF inspired gear may interest us. Especially someonelike me that went to Georgia Tech. If you don't like it skip over the article!

I am so very glad that Seibertron opted to stop covering the third party market in favor of... this.

And that logo? I understand the premise; to mix the Decepticon icon, a football helmet, and work in Calvin Johnson's number along the way. This does not change the fact that it is neither obvious or inspired.

Guys, like I said before, don't turn this into something it's not. While I'm not seeing any obvious connections to Hasbro the official Transformers Facebook page is linking to the Nike press release. That tells me they're endorsing this or at least fine with it.

Folks, Nike has previously sold licensed Transformers tie-in shoes, mostly linking to the live-action movie series. Plus, they licensed their product image to TakaraTomy for the Sport Label toys. In other words, Nike has an established history as both a licensee of, and a licensor to, the Transformers brand.

I'd say that Hasbro has, at the minimum, given the okay to Nike. No way Nike's lawyers let this go through if they didn't.

About how many pairs at the store? just curious. Also, how many hat, gloves, hoodies, etc. did the store have?

As far as I know this collection was only available online at champs or East Bay. I bought mine at champs and they only had the hat and the shoes, at least when I was online in the morning. Not sure about quantity but when I checked later the shoes were sold out.

There is no question that Hasbro approved the incredibly prominent use of their marks on these products - if they had not, Hasbro legal would already by firing off cease and desist letters. That the official Transformers Facebook page is providing coverage of the release of these items serves only as further proof. However, this is neither here nor there.

The bigger issue is that Seibertron, after making a forceful point about dropping news of third party figures on the grounds that they were unauthorized and therefore tangential to 'true' Transformers coverage, is now covering the release of American football apparel - for no other reason than the football player this clothing pays homage to is coincidentally nicknamed 'Megatron'. So transforming robot figures are out, but barely-related sports gear is in? How the hell did things end up so backwards?
Re: Nike Air Max Flyposite “Megatron” Edition (1442305)
Posted by vectorA3 on November 26th, 2012 @ 12:00pm CST
The 3rd party figures/toys get coverage anyway, at least indirectly, b/c the online stores who carry them list them in their headlines. Heck, I bet some of the Hasbro employees buy 3rd party items secretly, b/c they know the character/figure will never have a US release and possibly for research.
The very cool Megatron themed Nike CJ 81 collection has been sanctioned by Hasbro/TF, so coverage of this shouldn't be sharply criticized
