Maybe it seemed like a foregone conclusion to some, but Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has achieved another major accomplishment and that is earning over $300 domestically and an equally impressive $600+ million worldwide.

The box office year got its first $300 million domestic grosser on Tuesday.

Paramount's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" passed that magical milestone after pushing its U.S. and Canadian coin to $299.8 million on Monday.

That same day, overseas boxoffice topped $300 million. So the Michael Bay blockbuster's worldwide tally runs north of $600 million.

Daily grosses remain strong as the Shia LaBeouf-Megan Fox starrer approaches its third weekend of global release. But Fox's 3D animated feature "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" topped the day's domestic boxoffice on Monday, with $$6.5 million to $6.4 million for the "Transformers" sequel.

Looming competition include a pair of comedies set to open on Friday -- Universal's R-rated Sacha Baron Cohen starrer "Bruno" and Fox's high-school laugher "I Love You, Beth Cooper," rated PG-13.

So, what does Paramount have to say about all of this? Here is their official press release.

$300 Million in 14-Days for Transformers Sequel

After only 14-days in release, the worldwide hit "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" became the 2nd fastest film in movie history to earn $300 million in U.S. ticket sales, eclipsing the previous record-holder "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," by 2-days. From director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg, the Paramount Pictures release trails only "The Dark Knight" in this record-setting achievement.

"Moviegoers everywhere propelled the film to this great success, paving the way for a phenomenal run," said Paramount Pictures Vice Chairman Rob Moore.

2007's "Transformers" earned $319.2 million in its theatrical run, and more than $700 million worldwide. The sequel has already taken in over $600 million worldwide to date, conquering several records including:

-- Biggest Wednesday-Sunday opening of all time.
-- Biggest Wednesday opening of all time.
-- Paramount's biggest international opening of all time.
-- 3rd biggest worldwide opening weekend of all time.
-- 4th biggest international opening of all time.

Based on the initial weekend receipts, Yahoo Movies and BoxOfficeMojo.com are reporting that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen took in over 201 million dollars in it's first five days, easily topping this week's Box Office. To put things in perspective, last week's champ, The Proposal, took in 18 million.

According to the numbers, the Transformer's sequel brought in roughly $201,246,000 in this US since it's release at midnight on Tuesday night. Added with the current foreign totals, the film has brought in a total of nearly 281 million worldwide, meaning it's already eclipsed its 200 million dollar production budget.

As we reported earlier, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has been doing excellent box office receipts in the UK. Michael Bay's blog has now been updated with official numbers for not only the UK debut but the Japanese opening as well.

Transformers 2 opened spectacularly in their world debuts in the UK and Japan, grossing a total of $20 mil from 846 locations. The Michael Bay directed film was a clear #1 in both territories, with the UK’s opening total of $14.1 mil from 517 locations outperforming rival comic book sequel Spider-Man 2 by 18%, the original Transformers movie by 71% and coming within 3% of the Dark Knight weekend total. In Japan, the film’s gross of $5.8mn from 329 locations was 64% ahead of The Dark Knight, and only 13% behind Transformers which had the advantage of opening in summer school holidays.

The franchise’s eagerly awaited second instalment opens across most of the rest of the world next week on Wednesday June 24th.

Mars Snackfood US announced today the availability of limited-edition M&M’S® Strawberried Peanut Butter Chocolate Candies and SNICKERS® Nougabot™ Bar to celebrate the June 24 release of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, in association with Hasbro, Inc. M&M’S® and SNICKERS® fans are sure to “fall” for the limited-edition product, which will be available from May through July in food, drug, mass and convenience outlets.

As anticipation for the summer blockbuster builds, Mars Snackfood US will also be rolling out a full-contact, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”-themed marketing campaign in support of the limited-edition products. Specific marketing campaign executions include:

* Action film director Michael Bay is putting his signature touch on a dramatic television commercial in which animated M&M’S® Brand characters, “Red” and “Yellow,” team up with the popular AUTOBOT® OPTIMUS PRIME™, to deliver the M&M’S® Strawberried Peanut Butter Chocolate Candies to stores around the country. The commercial will debut on June 1, 2009.
* Michael Bay himself will become an M&M’S® character for a new “Inner M” print ad that will be featured in June issues of Entertainment Weekly, US Weekly and USA Weekend. The print advertising is an extension of the brand’s “Inner M” equity campaign which encourages Americans to find their fun side and embrace their “Inner M.”
* Consumers will be able to join “Red” and “Yellow,” as well as other “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” characters on a digital scavenger adventure on http://www.mms.com, as well as other sites throughout the Web, beginning May 19, 2009.
* Kyle Busch’s No. 18 M&M'S® car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will sport a special “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”-themed paint scheme during the June 21, 2009, race at Infineon Raceway, where Busch took the checkered flag last year. The special paint scheme features movie title decals on the hood, trunk and TV panel and the M&M’S® Brand “Red,” “Green” and “Yellow” characters modified into “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” characters.

“M&M’S® Chocolate Candies have always been a favorite movie-watching treat and aligning ourselves with one of the most-anticipated films of the summer is a perfect match,” said Michele Kessler, vice president, marketing, Mars Snackfood US. “The battle between AUTOBOTS® and DECEPTICONS® echoes the ongoing debate over peanut M&M’S® versus milk chocolate. Fortunately, you don’t need to choose between favorite flavors with our limited-edition M&M’S® Strawberried Peanut Butter Chocolate Candies.”

“This campaign with the iconic M&M’S® brand is a great way to build even more excitement about the new installment of the ‘Transformers’ movie franchise with consumers everywhere – from the grocery store, on their computer screens and even at the racetrack,” commented LeeAnne Stables, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Partnerships for Paramount Pictures.

Media Decoder reports an article of the New York Times stating that Transformers Revenge of The Fallen has earned 50% more at UK box-office on Friday then it's predecessor Transformers the Movie two years ago.

Click here to see the original post.

You can’t tell much from the box office performance of a film on a single night, in a single foreign territory. But Paramount executives were congratulating themselves on Saturday over the Friday night results of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” in the United Kingdom. Word had it that the movie had done roughly 50 percent better than its predecessor, which two years ago went on to take in $389 million in foreign markets, and $319 at the domestic box office.

With the hot start in England, company executives were privately speculating that the new “Transformers” film had a shot at becoming Paramount’s second-highest grossing film, behind “Titanic,” which took in a monstrous $1.8 billion worldwide under a split deal with Fox.

That would be a nice start for Adam Goodman, who was named president of the movie group on Friday, as two fellow executives, John Lesher and Brad Weston, were ushered out. Both were offered producer deals. The betting here is that Mr. Weston will accept, while Mr. Lesher strikes for greener pastures.

BusinessWeek has posted an article analysing Hasbro's marketing strategy with the upcoming Summer movies: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and GI Joe: Rise of Cobra.

Toy giant Hasbro (HAS) used to bid against other toymakers for rights to sell toys based on hot movies. Now the tables are reversed, as some of the biggest movies this summer are coming right out of Hasbro's own toy chest.

Case in point, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the latest installment of the Transformers franchise, which opens in theaters on June 24. Analysts believe the film from Paramount Pictures (VIA) and director Michael Bay could be even bigger than its 2007 predecessor, Transformers, which grossed $700 million worldwide at the box office. That movie also sold $480 million worth of toys for Hasbro, 13% of the company's overall sales in 2007.

There's more on the way. Hasbro has a movie based on its G.I. Joe toy line coming out on Aug. 7. The company has an April 2011 release for a movie version of its Stretch Armstrong figure, to be directed by Ron Howard. That is part of a six-picture deal the company has with Universal Studios (GE), which included a movie version of Monopoly. Meanwhile, archrival Mattel (MAT) is working on movie versions of Hot Wheels and Major Matt Mason.

Turning its own toy brands into movies has a lot of benefits for Hasbro. The company doesn't have to spend as much on toy marketing since the movie studio is already doing that to promote the film. In the case of summer movies, it also means the toymaker spreads its sales more evenly throughout the year. And Hasbro doesn't have to pay the fat licensing fees to filmmakers that made Star Wars creator George Lucas one of the company's largest shareholders. "I can't give you specifics," says Hasbro's chief executive, Brian Goldner, but "it is more profitable when we own the brand."

Enduring Appeal

Since the original Transformers toy line and cartoon made their debut 25 years ago, the saga of cars, airplanes, and other devices that convert into battling robots has proven to have a wide, enduring (and for many people, surprising) appeal. Hasbro now has a large base of parents who are as familiar with the franchise as their kids. Michael Spector, a 37-year-old Web producer in Easton, Penn., has 600 Transformers action figures in his collection, so many it took a whole day to move them. He's planning on buying a few more of this year's versions, mostly on behalf of his 8-year-old son, T.J. "It's a bonding thing," Spector explains. "Who doesn't want to see robots beating the heck out of each other?"

Hasbro has borrowed heavily from its Star Wars experience in creating Transformers toys. There are $300 limited-edition robot sets for adult collectors, $22 action figures with lights and sound for younger kids, even $12 preschool robots. This year's Bumblebee Voice Mixer helmet, $40, looks suspiciously like a Darth Vadar toy Hasbro created under its Star Wars license. The $40 Plasma Cannon is a fatter version of a light saber.

Like Lucas, Hasbro has found ways to connect with its fans even in years when movies aren't released. BotCon, an annual conference for Transformers toy collectors, which Hasbro sponsors, just celebrated its 15th year. It drew a record 7,000 attendees to Pasadena, Calif., in early June. "It's fantasy," says Brian Savage, whose company organizes the shows. "People have to have something they enjoy."

Paramount paid the $200 million cost to produce the latest Transformers flick. But that doesn't mean Hasbro gets an entirely free ride. It must share some royalties for toys based on the movie with the studio and Bay. Hasbro also has to pay royalties to Takara Tomy (7867.T), the Japanese company that designed the original toys on which the Transformers are based.

Complicated Bad Guy

Hasbro does get a seat at the table in developing the script. This year's movie has three times as many characters as the first one—that means more toys. And there is a particularly complicated bad guy named Devastator, who is five bad guys in one. His toy retails for $99.

This year's movie involves more locations, jumping from the Middle East to China, which gives more kids a local connection to the brand. Hasbro coincidentally shifted from having independent distributors based in many countries such as China to having its own employees there distribute the toys to retailers. That means the manufacturer shares less of the profits. And retailers are expected to stock up this year. "The last time around, retailers underestimated demand and it was sold out for several months," says Sean McGowan, a toy analyst at Needham. "Hasbro will sell a lot more. More people are convinced it's a hot property."

The flurry of toy-based movies does raise the question of whether Hasbro is overdoing the tie-ins. A previous movie version of the board game Clue was a disappointment. "All this is cyclical," says Ira Mayer, publisher of The Licensing Letter, an industry trade publication. "You have one hit, there's a surge." Hasbro's Goldner says he's conscious of the risk of overkill. "We spend a lot of time working up front," he says. "We wouldn't bet into the business if we didn't feel it was a great story."
