LAUGHTER

SPOILER FREE
(CONTAINING SPOILERS FROM PREVIOUS MTMTE ISSUES, HOWEVER)

The Roberts/Roche/Milne ship rides out for another September voyage, with Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #9. By far, I feel that this was the funniest and most enjoyable issue for me out of the current era of IDW Transformers comics. Even if you take a quick glimpse at the preview, you can get the general jist of how the MTMTE creative team gets you interested and hooked into every page and panel.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #9 - Shadowplay!

Robert's medium in Shadowplay (and much like previous issues), is the wonderful characterization and fleshing out of these 'B-List' Transformers. Shadowplay brings us back to the past and shows us how these comrades on the 'Lost Light' are more intertwined than we previously thought they were.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #9 - Shadowplay!

Part One shows Chromedome's past, alongside the seemingly unpopular Prowl. Providing the suspense in this issue, it's fair to guess that this leads us to a better understanding of why Chromedome is the bot he is now.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #9 - Shadowplay!

We continue to look back into the past, as we see how Drift, Ratchet, and Orion Pax have crossed paths before. Shadowplay starts off where Ongoing #23 (what I feel is the best Ongoing issue) left off, and gives us more material on as to how Orion Pax became Optimus Prime. The interaction between Drift and Ratchet, past and present, is also pleasent to see.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #9 - Shadowplay!

Not forgetting about the other bots - Eject, Swerve, Skids and Whirl look to be fleshed out in the next issues of Shadowplay. Unfortunately it's not all roses, as one bot survives, another falls.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #9 - Shadowplay!

Overall, Shadowplay is a blast. The fact that Roberts can manage to have three scenarios that are equally interesting (two of them aren't even in real-time) is a tribute to how special this comic is.

FLIGHT

SPOILER FREE
(CONTAINING SPOILERS FROM PREVIOUS RID ISSUES, HOWEVER)

With summer fun in the books, the IDW ongoing Transformers series starts September off with Robots In Disguise #9. Issue #8 left us with a rather vague cliffhanger involving Ironhide and the Dinobots. Barber continues the RID series with a rather abstract issue in #9. Initially I felt that the Cybertronians stuck on their motherplanet had a slew of villains to deal with - I find it rather perplex and unfortunate that those 'villains' have yet to come and there's animosity among the ranks!

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots In Disguise issue #9
And she's climbing her spaceship to heaven

The characterization of the Dinobots continue, and they are certainly following their leader who's stuck in the MTMTE-verse. They manage to acknowledge their lack of intelligence by oddly bringing themselves together as a group. That's not very good news for Ironhide. Reading through the issue I get the sense that's there's something wrong with the water outside of the major city. A virus? A plague? Jedi mindtricks? We'll find out in the next few issues or two.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots In Disguise issue #9
Hey I just met you

Moving back to the main group, as readers we are focused into the mind of Bumblebee. While Bumblebee's political status in the Cybertronian hierarchy has increased tenfold in the previous Ongoing series and RID, I feel that Bumblebee's leadership qualities and personality have gone backwards. Once capable of bringing his fellow Autobots out of turmoil on Earth, he seems to be pulling a G1 Rodimus Prime, filling himself with doubt and stress, as his list of things to do keep piling on. Bumblebee's true resolve will be tested in due time.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots In Disguise issue #9
Got 99 issues, but Prowl ain't one!

We also get guest appearances from Arcee, Blurr and Reflector. The Reflector trio is hilarious as always. Being a bartender has turned Blurr into a moody fellow, and Arcee smiling is one of the creepiest sights I have seen in awhile.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots In Disguise issue #9
'Reflectors' at their best

overall, #9 sets up the Cybertronian faction with an incoming hurricane of events, however individually I felt that the issue lacked a 'wow' factor, even with the typical end page reveals. I also felt that the issue was forced to conclude itself in regards to Bumblebee, resulting in some confusion. Hoping our next issues and the upcoming RID Annual make this flight a little more enjoyable.

WHAT IN TARN-ATION?

SPOILER FREE
(CONTAINING SPOILERS FROM PREVIOUS MTMTE ISSUES, HOWEVER)

After being left with two different cliffhangers in the last issues of Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye, one could guess that means that Issue #8 returns us back into the fray - the fray, being robots beating the snot out of each other. That would certainly be the right assumption, as the D.J.D and our Decepticon dropouts decide to take center stage in Dinobot Month! If you liked Issue #7, then #8 extrapolates it furthur; as we learn more about the Decepticon Justice Division, their motives and why they're picking on this rag tag crew of 'cons.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye Issue #8
Lying through their roboteeth

The characterization of the D.J.D. is nothing short of magnificent - Tarn, Vos, Kaon, Helex, and Tesarus are as effectively obnoxious and arrogant as Overlord - heck, the D.J.D. is the neo-Squadron X. Some have thought that Roberts has made the D.J.D. a tad bit overpowered, but I think they are simply using their powers and notoriety to their advantage. Black or Sky, the way they decimated the Phase 6 Shadow in the last issue is nothing compared to what they pulled off in #8, or what they could potentially pull off in the future. The way Vos and Tesarus use their abilities, brings back that nostalgic Last Stand of the Wreckers feel.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye Issue #8
Do it like they do it on the Discovery Channel

Flip to the opposite side of the spectrum, and we take a look at our ragtag group of Decepticons.. who honest to Primus don't stand a chance against the D.J.D. Despite the David versus Goliath connotations, the dropouts are certainly a creative bunch. Roberts uses these 'cons as a venue for humor, and I do have to say that #8 delivers some good laughs, among the field of varying emotions. Despite facing the reality of death looming near, the Decepticons stay true to their personalities throughout every inch of the comic. Fulcrum, Misfire, Crankcase, Spinister, Krok and Flywheels make #8 a phenomenal issue - and you'll just have to read the issue to see if they'll make future issues phenomenal too!

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye Issue #8
Please make a toy of you

of course we can't forget about the catchphrase that's been inked across all of our Transformers comics in this month of August - it's Dinobot Month! So, where are the Dinobots? Well, as we know in Issue #7, there's only one on the planet of Clemency, and that's Grimlock! However with what I'd describe as a mixture of cold feet and disappointment, Grimlock isn't exactly what I'd expect him to be. Well, he's certainly Grimlock, and it's certainly a characterization of 'a' Grimlock - it's not what I'd expect at this point in time. I guess there's only one Fort Max! Speaking of which, we do have a couple of pages on the Lost Light, which does answer some questions, and leaves room for more. My main grip is that IDW uses an * to reference the MTMTE Annual - a comic that's going to be released next week! I'm not going to be complaining about an upcoming 40+ pages, but it would be nice to have closure within a comic.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye Issue #8
And you, you, you and you.

The D.J.D. make quite the bang in the their first combat sequence, and as readers I think we all want to be thirsting for more. Roberts mixes action and humor into one blend - #8 is certainly one delicious smoothie. Worth the wait and the money.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye Issue #8
Just make sure it's not on the Lost Light..

BURNING RING OF FIRE

SPOILER FREE
(CONTAINING SPOILERS FROM PREVIOUS RID ISSUES, HOWEVER)

With the last page of Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #7, their centerfold appearance in Transformers: Regeneration One #2, and IDW's Transformer theme for the month of August, it's quite obvious who's the center of attention in this week's Transformers: Robots In Disguise #8 - the Dinobots! Swoop, Slag, Snarl and Sludge are back in IDW action and are paired alongside the Autobot with newly found seer powers, Ironhide. As evidenced in RID #5, Ironhide believes that the Transformers race will return to its glory, and that he'll live to see the day. Hanging out with a group of Dinobots isn't the best way to make true to his premonition.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots In Disguise issue #8
They want need like to break stuff..

Now that the Dinobots are back in the current ongoing, aswell as the Generation One comics, and the upcoming video game, Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron, it's fair to compare the three different Dinosaur groups! Aesthetically they all fit very well to their respective media, however the one nack against the ongoing group has to be Swoop's robot mode design. Haven't been a fan of it since his appearance back in early IDW works. In regards to their characterization, Barber does a fantastic job at continuing off where Furman left off in Maximum Dinobots.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots In Disguise issue #8
Say my name, say my name, say my name

As much as I wish my comic reading palette was bigger, I can relate Ironhide to a character from the Green Lantern series, Guy Gardner. Mostly because both of them speak the same dialogue, and they both like to think with their fists rather than with their mind. Ironhide`s personality certainly leads him into situations where he`s not likely to abide by the rules. Thus I find it intriguing that he wasn't on the Lost Light when Rodimus departed - he'd be a great character to have in MTMTE.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots In Disguise issue #8
Everything is bigger in Tex.. Cybertron

Moving on to the other groups on Cybertron - Barber shows a very interesting side to Prowl when faced with the reality of political unrest among the Autobots, Decepticons, and NAILs. Let's just hope that his counterpart, Bumblebee, doesn't fall under the pressure with the situation that he's in. #8 also gives light to what's brewing in the Decepticon camp, and we get another great appearance and dialogue from Swindle.

Seibertron.com Reviews IDW Transformers: Robots In Disguise issue #8
It's Starscream's fault my FoC toy is so bad!

Ultimately, I feel that RID #8 is a great issue. The Dinobots and their quirky, rebellious attitude shine through, while events and emotions are starting to pick up politically on Cybertron. Barber shows us that whether it's war time or peace time, you never truly know who's got your back.
