Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Loses Box Office Record to Super Mario Brothers Movie

While you'll still find some deep hated hatred for the live action Transformers films amongst the fan community, it's easy to forget how popular and bankable they were in the past. Case in point, did you know that Transformers Revenge of the Fallen had the box office record for domestic (US) 5 day opening? It's held that record for over a decade and has only been beaten now by the Super Mario Brothers film.
At least that's what you'll see in the trades. And while it is accurate, here are some details to clarify that claim. Indeed, Revenge of the Fallen (ROTF) had amassed the most money for a 5 day opening week-end, meaning a week-end where the film opens on Wednesday. The record for ROTF was $200M domestically. The Super Mario Brothers film made $204M domestically within that same amount of time, finally beating it out.
That does not account for inflation though, which anyone looking at prices in the toy aisle is reminded of every day. With inflation, ROTF would be at $271M, so far more than the Super Mario Brothers film, and that would also mean that it sold more tickets than Mario at the time.
However, neither of those films are the true opening week-end winners since Avengers Endgame holds that title at $357M in only 3 days, which is crazy when you compare it to the $200M Mario and ROTF made in 5 days.
