Questions about Transformers '84 #'s 0-4 (SPOILERS)

Postby Rodimus_2316 » Sat Apr 03, 2021 2:09 am

1) The whole Skyfire thing. What the heck? So he was a Decepticon, cut nearly in half by Grimlock, then Shockwave removed this mind-component from his damaged body, hoping to put it in a new body, but was we saw in the early Marvel U.S. G1 comics, Shockwave made a body that was a copy of Skyfire's I suppose, but called Jetfire I think, but was going to use Prime's head's creation matrix to give him life. Eventually, Shockwave was defeated by Optimus, and he used the creation matrix to give Jetfire life as a noble Autobot. Is this as mistake on Furman's part in this TF '84 issue?

2) Seems here that, after the Ark crashed on Earth, Auntie (not from the U.S. comics originally, just UK and Regeneration One) and the ship were still fully functional, and remade the Dynobots to the Dinobots (from dinosaur fossils) to stop Shockwave. IIRC, from the original comics, the Ark was almost out of power, and used the last of it to make the Dinobots (based on the dinosaurs from the Savage Land, I guess?) from whatever they were before to fight Shockwave. Another story mistake? And of course they changed where they and Shockwave were originally-buried, from the Savage Land to some other place, due to legal reasons. I think dinosaurs were shown still around in the original Marvel Dinobots origin story with Shockwave by Marvel (just Savage Land, had to be), as their rescue by Ratchet there, as in fact dinosaurs were long extinct before then, as shown in one of the '84 comics?

3) As we don't see the G2 cons (Liege Maximo and co.) leaving Cybertron after the Ark crash, I guess these comics are ignoring the G2 comic, and perhaps aligning with Regeneration One instead? Not mention that some G2 con said that they left behind incompetent cons on Cybertron after they left, with a pic of Straxus and others, I think. But the Decepticons seemed to grow stronger after Megatron's destruction on the Ark in these comics.

4) Why did Furman mention these Decepticon turbine engines on Cybertron here, but were never talked about in the Marvel U.S. G1 comic (as much as I can remember)?

If there's one thing I like about these comics, besides the stories (depsite having continuity errors), is that Furman uses some unused G1 toys finally. I did it in Regeneration One also. It's a shame Andrew Wildman or Geoff Senior couldn't have taken part in this (despite Geoff Senior's Dinobot cover), maybe with the exception now with Wildman as he's not being able to draw TFs as good as he did in the original Marvel comics?

Thanks.

Not if you subscribe to the theory that a Transformer needs a spark and a brain module to be a sentient being. Grimlock effectively killed Jetfire in TF '84, but Shockwave saved his consciousness in his brain module. Then in the Marvel books he was going to use the stolen Matrix to recharge/recreate Jetfire's spark, thus making him a whole living being again. But Buster Witwicky got control of him first then Optimus finished the process for the good guys.

I dont have access to the Marvel issues right now, but I don't remember the Dinobots' creation being the ladt thing the Ark did. If that's how it was originally, then yes, it's a mistake. I never liked the concept of AUNTIE anyway.
And of course they changed where they and Shockwave were originally-buried, from the Savage Land to some other place, due to legal reasons. Yeah I think Savage Land is trademarked by Marvel and can't be used by Transformers now. Otherwise the details are the same. They fight then get buried. Only difference us, in the Marvel comic it was just a stupid mistake by Snarl, and in TF '84 it's Grimlock's instruction, which leads to his guilty conscience later on, because he thinks he caused the Dinobots' destruction because of it.

That is correct, or at least the most plausible assumption.
4) Why did Furman mention these Decepticon turbine engines on Cybertron here, but were never talked about in the Marvel U.S. G1 comic (as much as I can remember)?
The concept of the turbines was first discussed in the War Within comics, also written by Furman. But it wasn't in the Marvel comics. That doesn't mean it couldn't be there, it just wasn't talked about. I think TF '84 did a good job of inserting it into the story.

I'm also happy to see some scarcely used characters, it inspired me to get the newer toys representing them, such as the clones from both sides, the Duocons and Punch/Counterpunch. I didn't care about them beforehand, but now I have a more complete collection. I'm glad that Senior wasn't involved, I don't care for his style of art. That's why I never got into the UK comics. But Wildman and Guido Guidi are amazing artists and their style is beautiful to me.
