The toyline ended 20 or more years ago. I grew up with the cartoon and the toys and the comic books, too. I still have several G1 toys and even the first 40 or so issues of the comic book. I got a few seasons of the cartoon on DVD, and frankly, I don't see how it appeals to anyone but kids now, but I understand how it's a part of many Seibertronians childhoods, as it is mine.
But I don't quite understand absolute G1 purists. Sure, Devastator isn't green and purple and now looks like he's made up of actual construction vehicles instead of random blocks of green metal. Okay, Elita-1 is a purple motorcycle rather than a pink boat-thing. Soundwave turns into a futuristic satellite rather than a small, anachronistic blue tape deck with a cannon on his shoulder and turns into a 20 foot tall robot. It's okay! Things don't need to be exactly like the G1 cartoon series to be good.
Personally, I find the movieverse aesthetic really great. It's nice to see vehicles that don't change size and robot modes that actually look robotic and alien, or like they were actually formed from the parts of their alternate mode. That's what got me interested in the franchise again as an adult. It was a world I enjoyed as a kid, re-imagined as a more realistic looking movie and toys. So what if Ironhide isn't red? Would purists rather see him as a red minivan like he was in G1? What kid nowdays is gonna root for a minivan? Their personalities are still fairly similar (save for Ratchet's), their functions (Ironhide as field general/weapons specialist, Ratchet as medic, Starscream as groveling sycophant, Megatron as a calculating tyrant) are still the same. Just because they have a different, MORE REALISTIC, vehicle/alternate mode and are a different color than their counterparts of more than two decades ago, it doesn't make them horrible.
DUDE! Chill out. No one here is complaining about anything being ruined forever.
